NEET UG: the NCERT-first study plan that actually works

NEET is the one Indian exam where the textbook is the syllabus — and where 10,000+ candidates a year miss a good college by mark-splitting, not knowledge. This guide gives you the exact pattern, an NCERT-first method, subject weightage, a daily routine that fits a school/coaching year, and the mock discipline that converts NCERT reading into 650+.

The pattern, precisely

NEET UG is 3 hours 20 minutes for 200 questions, of which you answer 180 — 360 marks out of 720 come from the 180 you choose. Physics, Chemistry and Biology each present 45 questions: Section A (35 compulsory) and Section B (10 out of 12 to answer). Marking is +4 for correct, −1 for wrong, and Section B questions are your strategic lever — the entire exam design says 'pick the 10 you can solve fastest, not the 10 you fear least'. A 650+ score is the realistic band for government MBBS in most states; 700+ is the safe zone for top states and AIIMS through the NEET score. The question source you must internalize: NTA's published blueprint, which has kept Biology's weightage dominant (about 50% of the paper) and Physics as the traditional differentiator between the 600s and the 660s.

The NCERT-first method

Because NTA explicitly builds Biology from NCERT (and an increasing share of Chemistry from it too), the NEET method is the reverse of JEE's: read the textbook first, then train. For Biology, that means line-by-line NCERT for Class 11 + 12 — not once, but in three passes: Pass 1 (Class 11–12, with class) builds the concept; Pass 2 (first revision cycle) converts every chapter into 50–80 recall questions you write yourself (no question bank does this as well as your own questions); Pass 3 (final 60 days) is pure NCERT-speed reading — timed, chapter-by-chapter, flagging any line you hesitate on. For Chemistry, NCERT + one practice source: Physical Chemistry numericals need problem practice, Organic needs the reaction map, Inorganic is NCERT verbatim tested. Physics is the exception where NCERT is the base, not the exam — you need a serious problem layer on top. The method's core: the book is the syllabus, the questions you write from it are the training, and the mocks are the test.

Subject weightage and where marks actually come from

Biology (360 marks): Human Physiology and Genetics + Evolution are the recurring 80–100 mark engines; Botany's Plant Physiology and Zoology's Animal Physiology follow. These four clusters are ~half of Biology and are fully NCERT-scoreable — a perfect cluster strategy. Chemistry (180): Physical Chemistry (about 40–45) is the most consistent, formula-and-numerical subject of the three; Organic (about 45–50) rewards the reagent map; Inorganic (about 40–45) is pure NCERT recall with diagrams that matter as much as text. Physics (180): Modern Physics, Semiconductors, and Atoms are the guaranteed 30–40; Mechanics and Electrodynamics carry the depth; Optics and Current Electricity are high-yield per chapter. The strategic truth: a Biology-first preparation order (which is natural for medical aspirants) plus a Physics attack in the second half of the year is what separates the 620 group from the 660+ group — Physics is where NEET candidates are most overconfident, and overconfidence there is how 20 marks quietly disappear.

Daily routine — Class 12 version

The structure that holds up inside a school + coaching day: 45 minutes before school on Biology recall (yesterday's chapter, your own questions, closed book). After school: 20-minute reset, then a 50-minute block on Physics (the subject that needs the most thinking gets the most-rested brain of the day), 10-minute walk, 50 minutes of Chemistry (alternate Physical numericals and Organic reaction-map work daily), and 25 minutes of NCERT speed reading before sleep. Sunday: one full 3h 20m mock at the real exam time, analysed for 2 hours Monday morning. Total: 3–3.5 deep hours plus recall work, 6 days a week. The non-negotiables: Biology recall every single day (memory decay is the real enemy — a chapter forgotten for 10 days costs 2–3× the effort to recover), Physics never skipped (a skipped week shows up in mock Section A), and the phone out of the room during every block.

Daily routine — dropper version

A dropper year has one advantage and one danger: the advantage is time, the danger is that 'I have time' becomes the plan. The structure: 7–8 focused hours in 50-minute blocks with 10-minute breaks — Morning (2h30): Physics (hardest, freshest brain) + one chapter's NCERT Biology recall. Afternoon (2h30): Chemistry (Physical + Organic alternately) + one Biology chapter Pass 2 (question-writing). Evening (2h): mixed 60-question timed set (NEET-style, 3-section) + error log. Night (30m): next-day plan written on paper, 10 minutes of Inorganic NCERT. Weekly: 2 full mocks (one on Saturday, one on Wednesday), both analysed; one complete chapter revision cycle per subject per week. The dropper rules that matter: a written weekly plan (not a vague intention), a 7-hour sleep floor (droppers who sleep 5 hours by month 4 are training their own failure), and one full day off per fortnight — burnout in a 12-month race is statistically more common than lack of syllabus coverage.

The mock protocol

NEET mocks are run exactly like the exam: 3h 20m, 200 questions, 180 answered, at the real exam time, OMR or CBT as you'll face on the day. The Section B skill is the one thing only mocks can train: in every mock, deliberately spend 8–10 minutes at the start of each subject choosing your 10 from 12, and log whether your choices were right (did the skipped 2 end up in your 'could-not-solve' list?). Analysis has four columns: wrong (and why: concept / NCERT line / speed), correct-but-slow (target < 70 seconds on NCERT-type), Section B mis-choices, and the 20 'easy marks' you lost to carelessness. A NEET aspirant should be doing 25–40 analysed mocks over the year — the 650+ group averages double the 550 group's mock count, which is the single cleanest correlation in NEET performance. Every mock also gets a 'one-page summary' — your three biggest leaks this week, and the one fix for each.

The last 30 days

T−30 to T−15: NCERT Pass 3 begins — Biology full book in 12 days (two parts per day, timed at ~45 min/part), Physics formula + short-concept sheet only, Chemistry reagent map + Physical formulas. T−15 to T−5: one mock every second day, error-log-only revision in between, 50-question Biology speed sets daily (90 seconds per question ceiling). T−5 to exam: no mocks, no new content — formula sheets, reagent map, 20 Biology 'doubt lines' you flagged, and sleep locked at 7–7.5 hours. Eat the exam-day breakfast you've tested in the last two mock sittings. Pack the night before: admit card, ID, pen, watch. The final 5 days are a performance-priming phase: your job is to arrive rested and familiar, not to learn anything new.

Exam-day execution

The 20-minute instruction window: read once, breathe twice. First pass (roughly 80 minutes): every Biology question you recognize from NCERT — this is your 200-mark engine, take it cleanly at 40–50 seconds per question, and choose each subject's Section B 10 by speed. Second pass: Chemistry — Physical numericals you're confident on, then Organic; skip the long mechanism traps. Third pass: Physics in the order Modern/Atoms/Semiconductors → Optics → Mechanics — the guaranteed cluster first. Last 25 minutes: OMR check, flagged questions, and the 5–10 careless marks. With 1/4 negative marking, the discipline is identical to the mocks: attempt on two-eliminations, never on pure guess. And the meta-rule the toppers repeat: NEET is won in the first 90 minutes — by the time the hard Physics tail arrives, your Biology and Chemistry are already banked, and the pressure that breaks most candidates has nothing left to spend on them.

Focus engineering for a 12-month race

NEET is a memory-and-speed exam, and both are products of attention hygiene. Memory: spaced repetition is not optional — your self-written recall questions must be re-tested at 1 day, 3 days, 7 days, 21 days (a simple weekly 'doubt drawer' works: every flagged line goes in, and the drawer is re-asked every Sunday). Speed: the 70-second question ceiling on NCERT-type questions is trained, not innate — a 50-minute timed Biology set daily for 90 days is the intervention. Energy: check your focus DNA (the hours your sessions score highest) and put Physics there; most NEET candidates put their hardest subject in their weakest window and then blame the syllabus. And the streak: 6 days of structure + 1 mock day is the rhythm that survives a year — the day you skip is not the day that hurts, it's the day after, when the pattern breaks. Protect the rhythm like the exam is next week, because for 12 months, in effect, it is.
