One computer-based paper of 3 hours and 130 questions worth 390 marks: Physics 30, Chemistry 30, English Proficiency 10, Logical Reasoning 20, Mathematics 40. Every question is +3 for correct and −1 for wrong. If you answer all 130 and time remains, you may attempt 12 optional bonus questions (4 each in Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics) — again +3/−1, and you cannot return to the main paper once you start them. What BITSAT is actually testing
Not depth — throughput. At 130 questions in 180 minutes you have about 83 seconds per question, and the paper is designed so that a candidate who knows the syllabus but solves at JEE-Main pace runs out of clock with 20 questions unanswered. The second thing it tests is breadth outside PCM: English and Logical Reasoning together are 90 of 390 marks, nearly a quarter of the paper, and they are the cheapest marks available because almost nobody prepares them seriously.
Eligibility and why two attempts matter
You need Class 12 with Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics, 75% aggregate in PCM and at least 60% in each of the three (B.Pharm candidates take PCB instead). BITSAT lets you appear in both sessions and uses the better score, which changes preparation completely: session one is a real attempt and a diagnostic, session two is where the score comes from. Plan backwards from session two, treat session one as a paid full-length mock, and leave a four-to-six-week gap for targeted repair.
The three-month plan
Months one to two are syllabus and retrieval: NCERT 11 and 12 line by line for Physics and Chemistry, concept plus 30 timed problems per chapter for Mathematics, with every error logged the same evening. English and Logical Reasoning get a fixed 20 minutes a day from week one — vocabulary in context, sentence correction, analogy, series, blood relations, data sufficiency — because these skills build slowly and cannot be crammed. Month three is mocks: one full 3-hour timed paper every third day, analysed the same evening, and every question you got right but slowly re-solved under a 60-second cap.
Section order and the clock
Most high scorers do English and Logical Reasoning first: 30 questions, roughly 20 minutes, 90 marks banked while your mind is fresh and the negative-marking risk is lowest. Then Mathematics — the longest section and the one where fatigue costs most. Then Physics and Chemistry, leaving 15 minutes at the end for the bonus questions and a review pass. The discipline that protects the score is a hard 90-second cap: if a question has not yielded in 90 seconds, mark it and move, because one stubborn 2-mark problem costs you three attempted questions behind it.
Negative marking arithmetic
At +3/−1, a blind guess is break-even only if you are certain of nothing at all; eliminating two of four options makes guessing positive expected value. The practical rule: attempt every question where you can rule out at least one option, skip anything you cannot read, and never leave a question blank because you 'were not sure'. With 130 questions and this marking, an attempted-paper strategy beats a careful-paper strategy by a wide margin — which is why the error log tracks 'skipped but solvable' as its own column.
Timed practice that builds speed without wrecking accuracy
Speed comes from recognition, not from rushing. Run daily timed sets of 20 questions in 20 minutes — the pace you need on exam day — and separate them by chapter so you can see which families are slow. The fix for a slow family is almost always a missing shortcut or an unrehearsed standard result, not more practice: write the one-line method on a card and drill that family for three days. Keep one untimed session a week for genuinely new material, so the timed work stays retrieval practice rather than panic.
Focus engineering for a 3-hour computer test
BITSAT is a screen exam, so practise on a screen: the on-screen calculator, the mark-for-review flag, the section navigation. Your mock should start at the same time of day as your booked slot, in one sitting, with no music and no phone in the room. Run it as three 50-minute blocks with two 10-minute breaks in practice, then progressively close the gaps until you can hold 180 minutes straight — stamina is trained the same way content is. Log a focus score per block; the data will show you whether your drop-off is at minute 90 or minute 140, and that is where the extra break drills go.
The mistakes that cost BITSAT ranks
Preparing it like JEE Advanced (depth over speed), skipping English and Logical Reasoning entirely, ignoring the bonus-question rule until exam day, taking only one session, and doing untimed practice so that accuracy looks fine and pace never improves. The fifth one is quieter: booking a slot late and getting a time of day you have never practised at, then meeting a 9 AM paper with a body trained for 8 PM study blocks.
