Pomodoro timer for CA Foundation
CA Foundation needs 40% in every paper plus a 50% aggregate, so your weakest paper decides the result. Give it the first block of every day, do 25 objective problems with the negative penalty applied to your practice score, and write two full answers by hand each week.
The four papers, precisely
Paper 1 is Principles and Practice of Accounting, a written paper where method and working notes earn marks. Paper 2 combines Business Laws (written) with Business Correspondence and Reporting (objective). Paper 3 combines Business Mathematics, Logical Reasoning and Statistics, largely multiple choice with negative marking. Paper 4 combines Business Economics (objective, with negative marking) and Business and Commercial Knowledge. Durations differ between the written and objective papers, ICAI has revised the scheme and the exam calendar recently, and it now runs more than one cycle a year — so read the current ICAI bulletin and registration announcement before you fix dates or timings.
The passing rule, and why it changes your plan
You need at least 40% in each paper separately and 50% in aggregate. That single rule makes your weakest paper the binding constraint: scoring 85 in Accounting cannot rescue 35 in Mathematics, because the paper-level minimum fails you regardless of the total. Build your timetable by ranking the four papers from weakest to strongest and giving the weakest one the first block of every day, when your attention is freshest. Re-test the ranking every fortnight with a timed paper, because the order changes as you improve and the block should follow it.
Negative marking in the objective papers
The MCQ portions penalise wrong answers by a quarter of the question's marks, so blind guessing costs while elimination pays. In Paper 3 the arithmetic and statistics questions usually have one option close to a common slip — a decimal shift, a wrong sign, a formula half-remembered — which means a quick sanity check catches most penalties. Practise objective sets with the penalty enforced in your scoring, so you feel the cost of a careless mark rather than discovering it in the exam hall.
Frequently asked questions
What are the passing marks for CA Foundation?
At least 40% in each of the four papers separately and 50% in the aggregate. Because the paper-level minimum is absolute, your weakest subject determines the result, which is why the daily first block should go to it.
How many papers are there and what are they?
Four papers of 100 marks each: Principles and Practice of Accounting; Business Laws with Business Correspondence and Reporting; Business Mathematics, Logical Reasoning and Statistics; and Business Economics with Business and Commercial Knowledge. Papers 3 and 4 are largely objective.
Is there negative marking in CA Foundation?
Yes, in the objective portions — wrong answers cost a quarter of the question's marks. Practise MCQ sets with the penalty applied to your score so elimination becomes a habit rather than a guess.
