The pattern, precisely
Two papers on one day, both offline on OMR. Paper 1 is Mathematics: 75 questions worth 100 marks in 2 hours. Paper 2 combines Physics (40 questions, 60 marks) and Chemistry (40 questions, 40 marks) into a single 2-hour paper of 100 marks. There is no calculator. Across both papers Mathematics is half the total score, which is the most important structural fact about this exam. Confirm the year's composition and the cutoff dates from the current WBJEEB bulletin — the Board has revised category counts and timings before, and this plan assumes you re-read it.
The three question categories
Category 1 questions are single-correct and carry 1 mark; Category 2 are single-correct and carry 2 marks; Category 3 have more than one correct option and carry 2 marks. Category 1 and 2 wrong answers cost a quarter of the question's marks as a penalty. Category 3 is the trap: you get the full 2 marks only if you mark every correct option and no incorrect one, and marking any wrong option costs the penalty. There is no partial credit for marking some of the right options, which turns Category 3 into a decision problem rather than a knowledge problem.
How to play Category 3
Attempt a Category 3 question only when you can positively confirm every option you are marking and positively rule out at least one you are not. If you can confirm two options and are unsure about a third, leaving it blank scores zero while marking the third risks the penalty — and with no partial credit the expected value of a coin-flip third option is negative. Practise Category 3 separately from the rest: 10 questions a day, marking which options you confirmed versus guessed, until your confirmed-only accuracy is high enough that skipping feels boring rather than frightening.
